FAQ – AI Powered Toll Collection

How is ZIG Superwallet different from traditional tolling mobile app wallets?

Most tolling apps are reactive: they let users view statements, load funds, or pay invoices after a trip. ZIG is proactive — it detects the user in real time, processes tolls as they travel, and enables rider-based payments instead of vehicle-only accounts. This means we support more flexible use cases like rental cars, carpooling, corporate travel, and embedded experiences within other apps — all while enabling seamless, hands-free payments.

Feature Traditional Toll Apps ZIG Superwallet
Payment tied to Vehicle (license plate or tag) Individual rider (via phone or smartcard)
Detection method Passive LPR or RFID Active Bluetooth sensors + optional GPS
Trip visibility After processing Real-time during trip
App role View & manage account Detect, trigger, and pay toll hands-free
Lane dependency Strict (LPR per lane) Lane-flexible via ZIG sensor corridor
Supports carpools, rentals Limited Yes — user-based, not vehicle-based
Third-party integrations Rare Yes — embeddable in MaaS, navigation, ride-hailing
Loyalty/rewards/gamification Uncommon Fully supported
How does ZIG Superwallet compare to transponders currently in use?

While traditional transponders rely on hardware and are vehicle-bound, ZIG is software-driven and rider-centric. It offers a hands-free, mobile-first experience, enabling tolls to be paid automatically via the rider’s phone or smartcard. For riders, it eliminates hardware hassles and enables greater flexibility. For agencies, it lowers operational costs, improves compliance, and supports more personalized, data-rich tolling services.

Feature Traditional Transponders ZIG Superwallet
Form Factor Physical device in vehicle Mobile app or smart card
User Identity Tied to vehicle Tied to individual
Payment Trigger RFID detection at gantry BLE sensor detects user presence
Hardware Required Tags, RFID readers, license plate cameras BLE sensors + rider’s phone or card
Trip Data Availability After trip, from back office Real-time during trip
Cost to Issue & Maintain High (device, installation, replacements) Low (software-based, no physical tag)
Supports Shared Vehicles Limited (1 tag = 1 vehicle) Yes — detects individual users regardless of vehicle
Integration into Other Apps No Yes — embeddable in MaaS, ride-hailing, parking, etc.
What are the benefits of ZIG Superwallet to the Rider?
  • No Hardware Needed: No transponder to buy, install, or replace.

  • Better Customer Experience: Frictionless payments improve satisfaction and reduce support burden.
Can ZIG calculate toll pricing in real-time or immediately after the trip is completed?

Yes. ZIG Superwallet can display toll charges instantly or post-trip based on the vehicle’s travel through toll zones. We support integration with existing lane systems to receive entry/exit data, timestamps, and vehicle class for real-time or just-in-time fare calculations. The toll rules (distance-based, fixed-fee, or congestion-based) can be processed by your system or within our backend.

Are you using geolocation to detect trips, or how do you determine presence?

ZIG uses AI & Bluetooth enabled sensors, not just GPS. Our sensors detect the presence of a rider’s mobile device or smart card anywhere in the vehicle at toll points in real-time, which ensures high accuracy without relying solely on geolocation. This method reduces battery drain and increases precision in lane-specific detection.

What happens if a vehicle changes lanes while traveling through a toll zone?

ZIG sensors are typically installed in gantry configurations with overlapping detection fields. This creates a corridor of coverage across multiple lanes, allowing accurate detection even if a vehicle switches lanes mid-zone. Additionally, signal triangulation and directionality improve accuracy.

Does ZIG Superwallet replace existing toll lane equipment like LPR and axle sensors?

No. ZIG is designed to work alongside your existing infrastructure. We do not replace LPR, cameras, or axle counters. Instead, we enhance the system by linking rider identities and payment accounts to the trip, enabling hands-free, user-level payment.

Where does the pricing logic or toll calculation occur in your system?

ZIG can operate in two ways:

  • Integrate with your existing back-office, which performs pricing calculations based on lane data and vehicle classification.
  • Host the pricing logic on ZIG’s backend, using toll rule configurations you provide.

Either way, we facilitate real-time fare visibility and hands-free payment for the end user.

What incremental business value does ZIG provide beyond payment timing?

ZIG offers several key advantages:

  • Rider-Level Payment and Insights: Track usage per person (ideal for carpools, corporate, or family plans).
  • New Revenue Streams: White-label tolling in 3rd-party apps, MaaS integration, embedded payments.
  • Operational Efficiency: Reduces back-office enforcement, minimizes leakage and disputes.
  • Customer Engagement: Real-time trip summaries, loyalty programs, push notifications, and behavior analytics.

Either way, we facilitate real-time fare visibility and hands-free payment for the end user.

What is the role of camera-based AI features like FEDS in tolling?

Camera-based AI solutions such as FEDS (Fare Evasion Detection System) are essential for enforcement, compliance, and fraud prevention. In tolling environments, FEDS can:

  • Analyze driver behavior (e.g., switching lanes to avoid sensors or tailgating through barrier gates)
  • Verify vehicle occupancy or special lane misuse
    (e.g., HOV lane violations)
  • Capture license plates and vehicle images
for post-trip auditing or dispute resolution
  • Support AI-based violation detection  that integrates with toll back-office systems for citations or alerts

ZIG Superwallet can integrate with these AI camera systems to cross-verify events, enhance enforcement accuracy, and improve trust in automated tolling.

What other use cases does ZIG Superwallet support for your riders in addition to paying toll?
  • Public Transit
  • Demand-Response and Paratransit
  • Rideshare & Carpooling
  • Parking
  • Event Ticketing and Access Control
  • Campus & Corporate Environments
  • Incentives, Rewards, and Loyalty
  • Multi-region or Cross-border Travel
