Many people don’t realize that a website is actually just the surface level of the way the internet and search engines work. While a website plays a key role in online marketing and SEO, choosing the right platform to host your website is just as important as the site itself. To distinguish the two, a platform allows additional website functionality through means of application programming interface, API. The API allows different functionalities to become active on a website, enhancing its purpose and marketing benefit.
Based on the goals of a particular website, various platforms may take precedence over others. One of the most popular platforms is PHP, used by over 240 million websites. The simplicity of PHP is its biggest draw, making coding easy for those with little experience. On the contrary, because it is so simple to use, it is not much deeper than surface level, so for extensive websites, it is not “fancy” enough. For a smaller scale website with entry-level programmers, PHP is a great platform choice.
Like PHP, the Java platform is an original that has been around for 20 years. However, it is quite a bit more complex than PHP, requiring opposite skill levels to operate. Java should be used when a large amount of custom coding is required for an enterprise level site, and when working with programmers and developers with extensive knowledge of the platform. Most everything related to Java is open source or free, meaning licensing is not an issue and it offers a large support system of developers.
Another popular platform is .NET, built by Microsoft and is higher level and more complex than PHP and Java. It is intended to support multi-layer sites, and A-level corporations often use the .NET platform to support such a large website. .NET is known for its simplicity when coding, however, because Microsoft has so many complex functions within .NET, it can be hindered by page load time, and experience bugs. Overall, .NET is a reliable platform for most sites as long as the programmer has an extensive knowledge of the platform.
Lastly, ROR or Ruby on Rails is the newest of the platforms and has gotten more publicity in the last ten years. It is a reliable platform with a huge support system, and it easy to use. The difference between ROR and the above-mentioned platforms is that Ruby is a built-in programming language rather than scripting language and is easily scaled for serious programming with a quick turnaround time in development. The language is not as popular unless it is focused in a niche domain, and developers aren’t as easy to come by for ROR as opposed to other platforms.
